‘Evenfall’ is the old-fashioned word for twilight, or more specifically, that passage of the day when the sun begins to fade until it has finally set.
There are few places in Tasmania with quite the history of Evenfall.
Situated on the western slopes of the Tamar River, the site on Upper McEwans Road was first planted in 1972 by Tasmanian wine pioneer Ralph Power, making it one of the state’s founding vineyard sites. More than 50 years later, the vines are still there – including some of Tasmania’s oldest cabernet sauvignon – alongside pinot noir and chardonnay.
In 2021, the vineyard found four new custodians, including Tasmanian-born agricultural legend Richard Winspear, taking on the historic property with a shared ambition for realise its potential. Since then, they've assembled a team with deep knowledge of the island and its vineyards.
Jimmy Watson-winning winemaker Liam McElhinney leads production, while viticulturist Christian de Camps oversees the vineyard.
In addition to its award-winning onsite restaurant, the property is also home to Natalie Fryar’s Bellebonne and Hugh McCullough’s Wellington & Wolfe labels, making Evenfall something of a hub for some of Tasmania’s most accomplished wine folk.
