It began with a bottle.
Next came Moo Brew.

 

The year: nobody’s quite sure, but somewhere in the early 2000s, David Walsh—professional Tasmanian gambler, eventual builder of Mona (Museum of Old and New Art)—got a little drunk somewhere in eastern Europe. He finds a very nice bottle. He likes the bottle a lot.

 

He likes the bottle so much, in fact, that he decides he’s going to build a brewery to make beer, just so it can go into bottles like this one. As you do. He already has a foot in the pond of booze, having already bought one of Tasmania’s oldest wineries—Moorilla Estate.  So the brewery goes on the same site, and pinches a bit of the name, too: Moo Brew is born. 

 

That was 2005. A lot has changed since then, but our core DNA (a little arty, a little weird, but mostly dedicated to making excellent beers, true to style but with a twist) remains.

We’ve moved out of the original brewery (which is now Mona’s laundry), and into a big concrete cube in Bridgewater. Here we’ve been able to spread our beery wings and now, two decades later, we’ve grown to become Tassie’s oldest, largest and most awarded craft brewery (Indies Tasmanian Champion Brewery three years running 2021-2023).
