One of the most exciting dates on the Saint Wine calendar each year is the privilege of seeing McHenry Hohnen's latest crop of world-class single vineyard chardonnays hit the trade.

Under the guidance of winemaker Japo Dalli Cani, McHenry Hohnen's single vineyard chardonnays continue to elevate the reputation of Southern Margaret River every year and increasingly, these wines need little introduction: year in and out, they are widely recognised as some of the most thrilling and category-defining chardonnays being made in Australia today.

“It was an absolute stunner of a season in 2023, an exceptional vintage” reminisces Japo. “Balance between amazing power and concentration, and natural acidity, which you can see in our chardonnays.“

“There was a lot of good rain during the growing seasons, good yields and flowering conditions – one of the best chardonnay seasons I've been involved in.”

As of writing (April 2025), the McHenry Hohnen 2023 Single Vineyard Chardonnays are available to order – but won't last long.

McHenry Hohnen Burnside Vineyard Chardonnay 2023

96 Points, Gary Walsh, The Wine Front

95 Points, Erin Larkin, Robert Parker Wine Advocate

Hand-picked, whole bunch pressed, straight to oak (40% new) with full solids and wild yeast fermentation. No MLF.

“The 2023 Burnside Vineyard Chardonnay is from the Burnside vineyard, which was planted in 1981, and the wine speaks clearly of pink grapefruit, salted cashews, yellow-flesh peach, mustard seed and a hint of marzipan. The wine is piercingly intense and populated by penetrating fruit characters that linger long through the finish.”

“The fruit is only "'just ripe" in that the acidity skates a very fine line between green and juicy. I find this to be a little distracting, despite being somewhat infatuated by the personality of the fruit flavors themselves. There's a lot going on here, and on balance, this is my favorite of the cuvées this vintage. I find the level of sapidity here to be outrageously impressive.” – Erin Larkin

McHenry Hohnen Hazel's Vineyard Chardonnay 2023

95 Points, Erin Larkin, Robert Parker Wine Advocate

95 Points, Gary Walsh, The Wine Front

Hand-picked, whole bunch pressed, straight to French oak barriques (40% new) with full solids and wild yeast fermentation. No MLF.

“The 2023 Hazel's Vineyard Chardonnay shows more flesh and ripe positioning than the Calgardup Brook tasted alongside it. Here, cilantro, kiwi fruit, white pineapple, white flesh stone fruit and chamomile tea adorn the bouquet.”

“The wine is imbued with piercing acidity and a silky, lush nougat-marzipan character. The purity and flow of the wine from a textural standpoint is one of the highlights. This is polished, svelte and very smart. ” – Erin Larkin

McHenry Hohnen Calgardup Brook Vineyard Chardonnay 2023

96 Points, Angus Hughson, WinePilot

95 Points, Erin Larkin, Robert Parker Wine Advocate

Hand-picked, whole bunch pressed, straight to French oak barriques (40% new) with full solids and wild yeast fermentation. No MLF.

“Of all the 2023 single releases from McHenry Hohnen, this is the most stylish wine with an equal mix of subtlety and power. Beautifully refined as it offers up wafts of lemon rind and grapefruit with seaspray complexity and well integrated French oak. Compact and focussed in shape as firm acidity underpins concentrated salted grapefruit and chalky complexity over a lengthy and sustained finish. Young, and built for the long haul.”  – Angus Hughson

McHenry Hohnen Laterite Hills Chardonnay 2023

94 Points, Gary Walsh, The Wine Front

A blend of McHenry Hohnen's three main single vineyard sites: Hazel’s, Calgardup Brook and Burnside, with a small amount from the Chapman vineyard.

Handpicked and whole bunch pressed, wild fermentation with full solids in French oak (25% new). No MLF. 10 months maturation prior to bottling.

“Lime, green mango and papaya, almond, a little aniseed, cedar and spice. It’s juicy and tight, but has a light gloss and savoury edge, quite flinty, a somewhat lascivious bite to acidity, but then it rolls more soft and flavoursome, gently tropical, with excellent length of flavour. It shows the energy and charm of this vintage to full effect. Delicious. I like it a lot. Yum.” – Gary Walsh
